Copa Jerez raises the bar this year combining the international contest with a culinary congress featuring internationally renown leaders in gastronomy.
One of the most anticipated events in the Copa Jerez Forum program this year, is the tasting and concert that will take place on June 12th 2017, in the Cloisters of Santo Domingo Jerez, titled "De Tal Palo, Tal Jerez", where flamenco will be harmonized with true enological treasures through the last guitar of Paco de Lucía, “La Maestro”.
Each one of the chords played on this instrument "La Maestro", reminds us that Paco de Lucía is still alive in his music. Even more, the legacy of the artist from Algeciras reaches beyond flamenco to other musical genres and to culture itself. The same can be said of the wines of Jerez, which go beyond oenology, beyond their close ties to high cuisine, establishing their presence in traditions, trends and cultural creation.
To highlight this remarkable influence, and in line with the intention of the Copa Jerez Forum taking this edition to the next level, "De Tal Palo, Tal Jerez" will close the first day of the Forum with this unique and historic event. For this tasting and concert, Josep Roca, sommelier and owner of El Celler de Can Roca*** (one of the best restaurants in the world), has selected himself, right from the cask, a collection of wines that encompasses the long history of the Sherry Triangle and that also provides a glimpse into the future. Some of these wines aren't available on the market, and others are the result of recent work by enologists from Jerez, showing that Sherry still has many surprises in store.
Josep Roca said:
The pairing of Jerez and flamenco serves as cultural representation of a territory that resonates all over the world. Flamenco art and Sherry bring together seduction, bewitchment, roots and mystery. The wines of Jerez have the same complexity as the palos of flamenco.
The art of Diego del Morao, one of the best flamenco guitarists in the world, will be joining Josep. The musician will be in charge of pairing the different flamenco palos with the sensory impressions that the wines will awaken in the audience. To achieve this, he will harness the power of an extraordinary instrument, “La Maestro”, the last guitar made for Paco de Lucía.
Paco de Lucía’s legendary guitar has travelled with Iberia Airlines over 21,000 miles in a universal project titled “La Guitarra Vuela” (“The Flying Guitar”), a tribute to the genius of flamenco. From Lisbon to Buenos Aires, from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo, from New York to Havana, artists such as Caetano Veloso, Carlinhos Brown, Alejandro Sanz, Mariza, Tomatito or Muñequitos de Matanzas have paid tribute to Paco de Lucía playing notes of bossa nova, rumba, guaguancó, tango, fado, vallenato, jazz, etc. on the Spanish guitar, the instrument to which he dedicated his life. Jerez de la Frontera is not only famous for being the capital of Sherry Wines but is heralded as the city of Flamenco, so it is only fitting that "La Maestra" makes an appearance during the Copa Jerez Forum at the Sherry and Flamenco tasting "De Tal Palo, Tal Jerez".
According to César Saldaña, director of the Regulatory Council of Sherry Wines (the institution that promotes and organizes, together with Fedejerez, this great culinary forum),
De Tal Palo, Tal Jerez will be a unique experience bringing together the two elements that shape the identity of our town: flamenco and wine. With Josep Roca and Diego del Morao, we will tread, in ten steps and with our five senses, the roads that go from the flamenco quarters to the bodegas, from the vineyards to the sea, searching together for the deepest roots that nurture both artistic expressions. And all of this, thanks to the pervasive inspiration of the master Paco de Lucía, hidden inside his last guitar: ‘La Maestro’.
The world tour of “La Maestro” was made into a documentary, also called La Guitarra Vuela, which was produced and directed by Jorge Martínez, who is also the musical coordinator of "De Tal Palo, Tal Jerez" and the prestigious musician Javier Limón.
