In November we attended two The Wine Gang events – one in London and one in Edinburgh – and on both occasions ‘felt the love’ in the room for Sherry. The five wine writers behind The Wine Gang all know and love Sherry but it is always a real revelation for wine drinkers who don’t know Sherry to have the opportunity to taste the ‘Sherry rainbow’. As Sherry buffs know, there is a staggering array of styles but for the uninitiated at consumer wine shows it can be a bit of a surprise. So, it is always a real treat to share our knowledge and to pass on the secrets behind one of the best value wines in the world.
Surprisingly, in Edinburgh the scots had a real thirst for anything PX. I mean, we know how good it is, especially blended in cream Sherries, but it is often this style of Sherry that is (unjustly!) overlooked. So to have such an enthusiastic crowd putting their glasses out for more cream and PX Sherry was great. Needless to say they all received endless food pairing tips for the celebratory season ahead, including PX poured over vanilla ice-cream, of course!
This weekend (4-5 December) we are off to see the 1800-strong crowd at the Three Wine Men. The three guys in question are: Oz Clarke, Olly Smith and Tim Atkin – who all know a thing or two about Sherry (!) and are big fans.
