Today there are more than 150 certified venenciadores in Japan, largely part to an investment by Fedejerez and the Sherry Wine Council to run the contest for several years and an increasing appreciation by the Japanese people of Sherry Wines.
To achieve certification, the applicants must demonstrate extensive knowledge of Sherry Wine history and culture, showcase their skills with the venencia and pass a theoretical exam.
Noriko Sakumoto dedicated 2 hours per day for a year, in order to win the coveted title in 2015.

Along with a group of top sommeliers, chefs and bartenders from Japan, Noriko experienced the art of the venencidor first hand in the bodegas and vineyards of the área during a 4 day visit in late January. The visit was part of the prize for winning the contest. In addition the group participated in Sherry Education with the Consejo Regulador including various tastings and gastronomy and Sherry training.
Together with her husband Noriko Sakumoto owns a Spanish inspired restaurant, Ferminxto, which is named after Basque cuisine another passion of Norikos. Since gaining the title of best venenciadora 2015, there has been many curious customers visiting the restaurant, purely to inquire about Sherry Wines and of course to see Noriko first hand demonstrating the art of the venencia.
